I wanted to do a small project and decided to replace our plastic 10-year old mailbox with a wooden one. The plastic one was hit by a bat a week before I finished this one.

Timber Framing Saw Horses

I spent the day helping my cousin and his friend fashion a pair of very heavy-duty saw horses for use in timber framing. Designed to support heavy timbers being worked, the posts and beams of the pieces are joined with double mortise and tenons for maximum strength. Load of air dried White Oak Timber Original used for reference Sawing the waste from the tenons Finished post with taper to transition with base piece. (foot) Even though the oak was still moderately wet, it took a lot of effort to chop out the mortises. Mortising chisels and a bigger mallet would of been proper here, though my Pfeil bench chisels did admirably. Just need the base pieces finished and pegs installed and these will be ready to support a truck. The tenons are intentionally left proud to help keep beams, and work in general, centered on the horse.

Round tenon stool

I built this stool in between some of my commissioned work. I wanted some exposure to round wedged tenons in anticipation of the chairs I will be making in the future. I used a Red Oak cut-off from a local cabinet shop to make the top, with legs made of Hickory from the scrap pile. My Brother-in-law helped with the turning of which I have little experience. Walnut wedges in saw kerfs keep things tight. This is also my first time using hide glue.

Greene and Greene style Adirondack chairs

5/4 Spanish Cedar and Black Walnut accents make up this project. Quite a bit of machine work required for the templates and parts, not my normal commissioned hand work project. The plans were adapted from an old magazine article, I had a print shop enlarge them, glued them to material and cut them out. This was a first for me, and I normally don't follow plans and cut sheets either. Deceptive in the amount of work involved. Before and after finish. I'm utilizing "One Time" finish, expensive, but it's guaranteed for 7 years, and application is easy. I modified the plans with a wedged through tenon for strength.
