Oak Mantle

Latest project is a Red Oak mantle for my sister and her husband in their new living room. They requested a live-edge, natural look.

I let the beam acclimate to the shop for a few months, and slowly brought it to length and thickness. The fact that it was cut a few months ago will mean it will still split anyway. The largest cracks on the top surface were filled before staining and finish for ease of cleaning. I also left a bit of bark on on the live edge for some different color and character.

A few pics showing the final planing and the counter-bored holes I drilled, which accept the rods protruding from the wall
