Today wrapped up (pun intended) a pair of wine trays as Christmas gifts for friends and family, just in time.
I was going to fasten a leather pad for the bottle to rest on, but it is surprisingly stable just resting on the trestle, and not really needed. The round-over in the stem purchase keeps glasses steady, with just a slight lift to remove one.
Pretty straight forward design and joinery. Holding the top to the frame, the Black Cherry tray has wedged through-tenons, and the French Walnut has stub tenons with pegs. If I ever make more I would probably drop the height by about two inches and drop the trestle an inch or so.
Parts before assembly. It definitely helps to smooth plane/sand before assembly |
Cherry top is a re-sawed piece, book-matched and glued. |
The figured pieces of Norway Maple are for natural-feeling, positive thumb registrations when you pick up the tray |
A foot splintered when I was making it, so I decided (instead of scrapping it) to scarf another piece of wood to it, and actually accentuate the
"flaw" instead of hiding it
|
After mulling it over, I ended up fastening a strip of leather to support the bottle |
Finish is Waterlox, buffed between coats with a brown paper bag, and finally wax |
