Started a project in my backlog as the finish is drying on the current ones I'm wrapping up.
This will be the first project I've done following the concept of building with ratios instead of a unit of measurement. The book "By Hand & Eye", by George Walker and Jim Tolpin, explains this concept.
The French Walnut top was sawn, "book matched" and glued from a thicker board |
Squaring solid Cherry legs. These were saved from a pile of dunnage at a lumber yard. |
Straightening the Red Maple table frame (skirt) |
Mortises scribed
Rip sawing the mortises |
Chopping out the mortises, sharp chisels make quick work of it |
Using my #66 Stanley to scrape a bead on the skirt bottom. |
Fitting the skirt to the legs |
Squaring the end grain |
Cutting a Rabbet for the top moulding |
I made a thumbnail-shaped pattern to follow, then used a block plane to shape it. It leaves a multi-faceted shape that easily sands out. |
Oak pegs added to legs. |
Making the buttons that will hold the top to the skirt. There will be 8 total, so I shape one "stick" and will cut the separate pieces when complete. |
Finished buttons with brass counter-sunk washers and quality slotted brass screws. |
